Under-Graduate Historical Drafts

The following are undergraduate research papers written by myself, mainly as assignments for different courses at Hampden-Sydney. As you read them, please keep in mind that some are still in draft form, and though most of the content is final and accurate as is, there are spelling and grammer mistakes throughout. Also, many were written as classroom assignments which were limited to course readings so they have citations, but no bibliography.

Also, as you read, keep in mind that the inturpretations and arguements of these papers are fairly narrow as they are limited in primary and secondary source documents, and again, are only undergraduate leval papers.

History is a fluid study with no concrete answers and few 100% solid facts. Do not take anything you read from this site as truth, but use the material as food for thought, and to learn about different aspects of history. The best way to form a valid historical opinon is to read as many primary and seconday sources on a topic and form some conclusion from the information gathered. In none of these papers has this task been accomplished.

So, in a nut shell, don't quote these, don't sue me, and I hope you enjoy what I've put up on this site!

This is a paper describing certain ministers of the Great Awakening of the 1740's.

This paper was written with a lack of context and some missed points of inturpretation. See if you can find out what they were!! Hehe.

This is an independent study concerning the history of the United Stated Lifesaving Service which I conducted in the fall of 2004.

Again, this paper was unfortunately a bit out of context. There is little description of events that occurred around the service or other notions of humanitarian organizations during the same time period. I am currently working on a project involving the Massachusettes Humane Society which will include several primary source documents and much more information regarding the humanitarian efforts that began to sping up during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

These are two papers I wrote two semesters ago on American History topics. One is a short summary of Bacon's Rebellion, and the other is on the XYZ Affair and the early period of insecurity concerning France.

The XYZ Affair

Im not too sure if these have been proofread, but I think they probably havn't, so read with some discretion. Also, the citation format is both MLA and incorrect, so watch out for that too. Thoe content is true however, and can teach you something.

I'm currently beginning my research project on the Massachusetts Humane Society. I found a really neat book comissioned by their president in 1916 that contains a detailed history of the organization and much valuable information. It also has portraits of early presidents and medals, as well as a library checkout card from 1916. Oh, and apologies to the Fogg Library in MA, btw.

I've copied 8 of the thirty some primary source documents made available by UVA on the topic. They are discourses and surmons given to the society at their semiannual meetings, and are quite fascinating.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot... I've created a lifesaving service forum.
