  • Neil Peart's "News Weather and Sports" - November 2009
Neil Peart has updated his website with "AUTUMN SERENADE", his latest edition of "News Weather and Sports". Neil has this important bit of news for us:
"In this autumn of 2009, the three of us are poised on another kind of 'reinvention.' We have agreed to meet in Los Angeles in November, and discuss our future. We learned many years ago that when we finish one long project—like a two-year tour following a year or so of writing and recording for Snakes and Arrows—we don’t make any further plans for a while. It’s good to feel truly free for a time, and to clear your mind to focus on what you’d really like to do next. Of course, these are parlous times in the music business, so our time-honored pattern of touring, recording, and touring is no longer the obvious way to do things. The music world—or at least the business of it—is very different now, even since 2006, when we began work on Snakes and Arrows. The importance of 'the album' is not what it was, and there is currently a reversion to a musical climate rather like the 1950s, when only 'the song' matters. Radio, downloads, and 'shuffle' settings are inimical to collected works. Because of that reality, record company advances that used to pay for album projects are a thing of the past, so if that was what we wanted to do, we’d be on our own......To this point, the three of us haven’t even discussed what we might discuss, so to speak—so our ideas and shared enthusiasm for the entity of Rush will be fresh, spontaneous, and quite likely exciting. For myself, I’m open to anything we can all agree on (I’ve pointed out before that in a three-piece band, we need consensus, not democracy—it’s no good having one outvoted and unhappy member). My favorite group activity is always songwriting and recording, and I’ve got some lyrical ideas and those new drumming frontiers to explore. However, those rhythmic concepts would also be inspiring for a new drum solo, if we decided to do a tour of some kind, maybe with an orchestra. We could write and record just a few songs, and release them some way. Or there were a couple of film-and-music projects we had discussed in the past. In any case, there are enough possibilities for future collaboration, and I am curious to see what we’ll come up with."

    - Thanks to Tony Stiles for the headsup!

My heart beat has just kicked up a few notches!!!

If you read between the lines it doesn't sound good.Record company not paying anymore-we need consesus not depocracy...oooh boy here it comes.>_<

I'm seeing it differently. I think we just may need to watch for something different than the typical album release. I can't see these guys not touring, since they're great at it, fans love it, and there's money to be made with it. They've proven obviously to be a great concert and appear to love doing it. I hope (and pray) that this isn't the end. I don't think it can be.

Neil has often said that touring is the part he enjoys the least and as far as his comment that "recording and touring is no longer the obvious way of doing things", I think the operative word he uses here is "obvious". It doesn't mean he's not up for doing just that, I think he's just excited to talk about many other possibilities with Geddy and Alex. Still, It's hard for me to see them deviating from their tradition of recording a new album and then touring in support.

I'm feeling hopeful for this reunion between them. I dont know what they will do, but im sur it will be worth it. its been 40 years they are around, they wont let us down

I'm seriously ready for Mr. Peart to put out a birdwatcher's book. I've never been into birds that much until reading his entries on News Weather and Sports. He's got a great way with words. Very down to earth.

I agree. It is time to think outside the box for new REVELATIONS of marketing characteristics.

Neil, you are the lyrical and spiritual inspiration to the band. You possess the thaumaturgic qualities of RUSH.

    We should talk.

sounds like they might be open to anything.
an album and a tour is what the fans would like.
lets wait and see what they would like to do.

I have mixed emotions about his statement, sounds like new material is on the back burner.
