Rush Tour
With Neil Peart, August 14, 1974 - January 31, 1975
RUSH released: March 1974 (Canada), July 1974 (USA)
Opened for: Uriah Heep, KISS, Manfred Mann, Rory Gallagher, Hawkwind, Blue Oyster Cult, Nazareth
"I consider them brothers. They were like brothers to me. More so than Gene and Ace and Paul. I hung with them personally. Like, after every night we would go out - true story ... and we were in Holiday Inns then, not Ritz Carlton's or Four Seasons ... - and we would get on the balcony in a snowstorm, get all the blankets from everybody's room, cover ourselves with them like Eskimos and share a bottle of Johnnie Walker Red. We got along so great. We talked about our wives - how we missed them, and our kids and how we missed them, and our moms and dads. We got to be really good friends. I love those guys. Those guys could never do wrong in my book." - Peter Criss of KISS, That Metal Show, November 28, 2009
"I have so many road stories, but one that always comes to mind is the tour we did in the summer of 1975 with Rush opening for us. I always liked Rush (and still do). After a few weeks on tour I started to get to know the guys in the band, and their very funny tour manager, Howie. One thing led to another and before long Peter and I were getting visits from the Rush boys. It usually turned into late evenings filled with beer and grass and whatever else was around. Alex Lifeson, the band's guitarist, used to do this hysterical routine with a large paper laundry bag. He'd draw a ridiculous giant face on the bag with a black marker and put it over his head with a couple of holes poked in it so he could see and breathe. Everyone in the room at this point was either drunk or stoned, but usually a little of both. Anyway, Alex would go into this routine with the bag over his head and while smoking a joint out of his eye he put everyone into total hysterics. He really milked the routine until everyone was gasping for air!" - Ace Frehley of KISS, No Regrets, page 188
"Neil was incredible. I remember that when Neil joined the band and started writing the songs with them, Paul Stanley told me, 'I love Neil to death, but he ruined that band. They will never be anything.'" - Mick Campise, Kiss Roadie, Kiss Alive Forever: The Complete Touring History

This was obviously a very busy time for Rush. The debut album was released in Canada in March, and drummer John Rutsey left the band in July due to health concerns regarding his type-1 diabetes. Neil Peart joined the band on July 29th (Geddy's 21st birthday), two weeks before the start of their first U.S. tour. The setlists varied from show to show, as Rush honed their skills and performed possible songs for their second album.

Unfortunately, little is known of this tour as there are only two unofficial live recordings in circulation. Comparison between the first recording in Cleveland on April 7, 1975, and the later performance recorded in Toronto on June 25th, 1975, show only minor changes such as moving "What You're Doing" to the encore, adding "By-Tor And The Snow Dog", and dropping "Bad Boy".

There are only two unofficial recordings of this tour in circulation; both are headlining shows, with the only difference being the placement of "In The End" in the setlist, and the encore changing from "Best I Can" to "What You're Doing". This later setlist is virtually identical to the All The World's A Stage tracklist, with the only change being that the "Fly By Night-In The Mood-Something For Nothing" medley is listed earlier in the show (inserted between "Anthem" and "Lakeside Park"), possibly to conform to album sides. The earlier show, recorded in Seattle in March of '76, was long believed by collectors to have been recorded seven months later during the All The World's A Stage Tour.
Previously, it had been assumed that Rush had opened for Styx this tour, and thus could not have performed the full 90 minute set demonstrated by the Seattle '76 recording. However, the usage of Rush graphics in this tour poster from March supports the belief that Rush was in fact the headlining act, while this tour poster from June leaves no doubt. More importantly, it has been pointed out that Moog Taurus pedals are not present in the Seattle '76 recording; if recorded in October they would likely be present, as Rush were definitely using Moog pedals by then (if not throughout the entire All The World's A Stage tour), as seen in this live photo from October 26th taken two days before the October Seattle show (the pedals are seen on the floor next to Geddy's mic). Lastly, although not as conclusive, during the Seattle recording, "In The End" preceded "By-tor And The Snowdog", whereas by the later May recording it immediately followed "By-tor", a position it would regularly hold in the setlist on multiple tours until it was last played on the Signals warm up tour.

This tour marked the first time Rush toured Europe, and also the addition of keyboards and Moog Taurus pedals. It is believed to be the last tour they regularly varied their setlist from show to show, day to day, with the exception of the Vapor Trails and Clockwork Angels tours (note: beginning with the Power Windows tour and continuing through the Test For Echo tour, Rush would "fine tune" the setlist during the first few dates of the tour before settling on a final setlist).

This is the last tour Rush performed any shows as a supporting band. Although shows early in the tour featured a setlist with "Cygnus X-1" preceding "Something For Nothing", eventually those songs traded places and the setlist was standardized for the rest of the tour with the exception being that "Anthem" was dropped occasionally for unknown reasons. This is the last tour to include either the song "Fly By Night" or "Lakeside Park".

"Geddy added that a slide display to coincide with ['Natural Science'] is being planned. 'We're expanding to a few other sequences which are going to be a little different. They feature a series of paintings by someone who actually lives in the Cleveland area. He's a fan of ours, and showed us his work the last time we were in Cleveland. We've kept in contact with him and we've now hired him to do a number of scenes. We'll sync the film with the music, like last year. Films are something we've always wanted to do, but it's all dictated by cost. Even now, although we're doing very well, there remain certain costs which are prohibitive. There's a lot of cities on the last tour that didn't see our film projections because they were still being made. Your're always catching up to yourself-you want to make sure it's right and put as much as possible into it. We've expanded somewhat on our lighting: it's an elaborate system already and is hard to add to. So, we maintain the quality and make subtle changes." - Geddy Lee, Northeast Ohio Scene, February 14-20, 1980
"Whenever possible, after each show, Rush and their road crew head for a nearby ice hockey rink for a late-night game with real sticks (contributed by some friends on the Montreal Canadiens team), real uniforms, and real body checking. In warmer climes, they're fond of the mini-auto race tracks in amusement parks." David Fricke, Circus Magazine, April 1, 1980

This is the first time the "Three Stooges Theme" was used to open the shows; it would be used until the Presto tour and then return for one final time for Vapor Trails tour. As demonstrated in numerous recordings, Rush had fun this tour, often changing the lyrics to some of the older songs such as "The Spirit of Baseball" and "The Plumbers of Syrinx" (with Lerxst adding additional vocals). For this tour, "The Camera Eye" was abbreviated such that only the "New York" or "London" section would be performed each night on a seemingly random basis. Although the setlist remained the same throughout most of this tour, "Chemistry" and "The Camera Eye" were dropped from the setlist in Germany, and although "The Camera Eye" was brought back for later dates, "Chemistry" did not return and has not been played since.

This is one of only two tours in which "Limelight" was not included in the set, either full time or as an alternate/replacement (the other being the Presto tour). Highlights of this tour include the then-complete performance of "Fear" performed in sequence, which included the first performances of "Witch Hunt". For the first leg of the tour, "Afterimage" followed "Closer to the Heart", and the Drum Solo was a medley with "Red Lenses". After the summer break "Kid Gloves" replaced "Afterimage", and the extended jam section was added to "Closer to the Heart". Beginning Oct. 18, the Drum Solo found its way back to "YYZ" as on previous tours, and a new bass intro and full bass solo were added to "Red Lenses". "Kid Gloves" was dropped from the setlist in Japan. For most of the tour a short Get Smart video was shown as the introduction to "New World Man", although during early dates it was shown as the introduction to "Vital Signs".

Beginning with this tour, Rush began its practice which continued through the Test For Echo tour of "fine tuning" the setlist during the first few dates of the tour: "The Weapon" followed "Territories" and was only played the first two nights of the tour; "Witch Hunt" was added the second night following "The Weapon", which was permanently dropped as of the third night. The sixth night of the tour, "Witch Hunt" would move up in the setlist to follow "Middletown Dreams", possibly due to their common use of electronic drums. Additionally, "New World Man" was apparently dropped from the last month of the tour; its last known performance was April 22, '86, and it would not be performed again until the Vapor Trails tour.

This is the last tour to include "In The Mood". This is one of only two tours in which "Limelight" was not included in the set, either full time or as an alternate/replacement (the other being the Grace Under Pressure tour). In addition, the first third of this tour are the only tourdates which did not include "The Spirit Of Radio" in the setlist since its inception. This is the first tour to include The Surfari's "Wipe Out" during the encore; it would also be included during the first leg of the Test For Echo tour.
Setlist changes during this tour: "Superconductor" originally followed "Show Don't Tell" and "The Big Money" began the encore. Five days into the tour, "Superconductor" was moved up in front of "Show Don't Tell". One-third into the tour (beginning 4/2), "The Spirit of Radio" replaced "The Big Money".

For this tour, "Freewill" and "Xanadu" were abbreviated, both segueing into other songs midway through the song. Performed on every tour since their release, "In The Mood" and "YYZ" were not included in the setlist for the first time ever; although this is the only tour to not include "YYZ", "In The Mood" has not been performed since the Presto tour.
Setlist changes during this tour: while not present the first few dates, "Ghost Of A Chance" was added during the first month of the tour. Beginning with the European leg a short "Cygnus X-1" teaser was added to close the finale (a practice which was brought back for the Test For Echo tour). Beginning with the Denver show, with less than a month left in the tour, "Subdivisions" and "The Pass" were dropped and "The Trees" was added, and as early as two shows later "Vital Signs" and "The Analog Kid" were also added in the slots previously held by "Subdivisions" and "The Pass"; these three songs would remain in the setlist for the remainder of the tour. During this final leg's performances of "The Trees", Alex regularly played a few notes similar to the Beach Boys' "Sloop John B", a treatment that would continue during the following tour.

"It was [Primus] that got us to bring back parts from 'Hemispheres'...they would jam at soundcheck with all this stuff and we'd stand at the side of the stage and laugh. We got very close with them and hung out a lot and they said, 'You know, you should bring some of that stuff back, it was so cool, it's what we grew up with...' So we figured, 'Yeah, ok!' We started messing around in sound check with bits and pieces from 'Hemispheres' and then brought it back on the last tour." - Alex Lifeson, A Show Of Fans #13, Winter 1996
This was the last tour in which Rush toured with an opening band. In addition, this is the only tour that did not include any part of "2112" in the setlist; in fact, nothing from the first four albums was in the set. This tour marks the return of "Hemispheres", with 'Prelude' performed for the first time in twelve years (it would only be heard again as part of the "R30 Overture"). Having fun this tour, Geddy usually introduced "Cold Fire" as a country song (often with a country music introduction), Alex again referenced a few notes from the Beach Boys' "Sloop John B" at the end of "The Trees" (a practice that began on the final leg of the previous tour), and Alex would also introduce "Stick It Out" with a humorous comment and later in the show gave humorous band introductions during the "Closer To The Heart" jam; the introductions were never the same, and never did he make correct introductions, usually introducing each member of the band as a famous celebrity.
The setlist for this tour remained constant until the addition of "Bravado" for only the final two weeks of the tour (one of those performances was included on Different Stages). Although not included in the final setlist, during pre-tour rehearsals "Distant Early Warning" was performed between "Force Ten" and "YYZ".

"No. You can't go back." - Neil Peart (when asked if Rush would ever again play the full version of "2112" in concert), Rush Backstage Club Newsletter, 1988
This was the first time Rush toured without an opening act; with the extra time available, "2112" was performed in its entirety for the first time ever (including 'Oracle'), and the "oldies" medley was dropped in favor of more complete songs. "Natural Science" made a trimphunt return after a fifteen year rest.
Setlist changes during this tour: "Resist" and "Time and Motion" were both performed for the first two dates only; following these two dates, the band alternated these two songs from one night to the next (and as demonstrated in various recordings, both were introduced with a Scottish reference). After the first ten dates, "Time and Motion" was dropped completely in favor of "Resist" and the setlist remained constant throughout the rest of the tour. The Surfaris' "Wipe Out", last performed during the Presto tour, was brought back for the first leg of this tour as the second half of a medley with "The Big Money", but was eventually dropped from the second leg.
The second leg of the tour varied from the first with the following changes: "The Big Money"/"Wipe Out" was dropped and replaced with "Limelight" and "Stick It Out"; "Subdivisions" was also dropped; "Red Sector A" moved up in the set to follow "Freewill".

For this tour every album was represented except for Caress of Steel and Hold Your Fire. This tour marks the return of "Cygnus X-1" (Prologue) after a twenty-two year rest (not counting the short teaser performed on every tour since '92). In addition, both "Working Man" and "By-Tor and the Snowdog" returned to the setlist after a twenty year rest, "New World Man" returned after a sixteen year rest, while "Closer To The Heart" and "Force Ten" were dropped for the first time since their inceptions (although "CTTH" would be brought back for the final U.S. date as well as the dates in Mexico and Brazil). It is also worth noting that in the tradition of "Witch Hunt", "Between Sun And Moon" was performed live for the first time though it was released eight years before.
Similar to the band introductions given on the Counterparts tour, each night Alex performed a unique rant during "La Villa Strangiato", a practice that would continue through the subsequent R30 tour. The drum solo included a complete triggered big band sample of "One O'Clock Jump", which Neil had performed with the Buddy Rich Band on Burning for Buddy Vol. II. "Resist" was performed acoustically, the first acoustic performance ever to be included in the setlist.
Setlist changes during this tour: "Ceiling Unlimited" was alternated with "Ghost Rider" each night for the first four months of the tour until "Ceiling Unlimited" was dropped permanently late in the tour (after 11/1). Later in the tour, similar alternations began to occur when "Freewill" first replaced "Vital Signs" on Aug. 12, and when "Between Sun and Moon" was replaced by "The Trees" for two consecutive shows, Sep. 20 and 21, and then began alternating each show thereafter. Eventually, there were two primary setlists, with few variations: 1) with "Between Sun and Moon", "Vital Signs" and "Ceiling Unlimited"; 2) with "The Trees", "Freewill" and "Ghost Rider". This second setlist, with the inclusion of "Closer To The Heart", would be performed all three nights in Brazil to close out the tour.

The setlist remained the same throughout the tour, the first time this had occured since the Hold Your Fire tour. Every album except Presto was represented, although a snippet of "Scars" remains as part of Neil's drum solo. This tour included an all new six song instrumental medley titled "R30 Overture" with each segment lasting approximately 1-1:30. These first six songs, and the following complete seventh song, are from the first seven albums played in chronological order. Counting "R30 Overture" as one song, there were 30 songs played. "Animate" was slightly rearranged for this tour: in the studio version the opening chorus is sung in full; for the R30 version the chorus is broken up such that the first half is sung at the beginning of the song and the second half after the first verse (it is sung in full after the fourth verse). "Red Barchetta" was the original arrangement, versus the psuedo-pop version toured in the 90's. "Between The Wheels" was played for the first time since the Power Windows warm-up tour. For the first time ever, "Grand Finale" was added to the "2112 Overture/Temples Of Syrinx" medley and "Working Man" concluded with a reggae ending (similar but unique to the reggae intro to "Working Man" which was last played during the Moving Pictures tour). The drum solo was similar to that of the previous tour in that it included the triggered big band sample of "One O'clock Jump", which Neil performed with the Buddy Rich Band on Burning for Buddy Vol. II. It it worth noting that this is the tour which included "Roll The Bones".
Continuing the practice begun on the Vapor Trails tour, each night Alex performed a unique "rant" during "La Villa Strangiato", and at the end of "The Trees" he played a bit of The Beatles' "I Feel Fine" followed by "Day Tripper" (in 1990, when asked what songs inspired him to play guitar, he began with "Well, I remember hearing the beginning of 'I Feel Fine' by the Beatles. There's a little bit of feedback that rings out in the beginning, and I thought that was the coolest thing I've ever heard! Also the riff to 'Day Tripper'..." - Guitar School, May 1990, Vol. 2, No. 3, pp. 20-24). Click here for additional comments regarding the setlist.

For this tour 9 of the 13 tracks from the new album were played live, and the largest percentage of new songs performed in support of an album since the Power Windows tour. The setlists for this tour were quite a bit more varied than recent tours: "Entre Nous" was played live for the first time ever; "Circumstances" [tuned down a full step] was not played since the Hemispheres tour; "A Passage To Bangkok" in its entirety for the first time since the Permanent Waves/Moving Pictures warm up tour; "Digital Man" [with a new arrangement] since the Grace Under Pressure warm-up tour; "Witch Hunt" since the Power Windows tour; "Mission" since the Presto tour; and "One O'Clock Jump" was replaced by "Cotton Tail" as the drum solo finale, performed by Neil with the Buddy Rich Band on Burning for Buddy Vol. I. Unfortunately both "Entre Nous" and "Circumstances" were replaced by newer, less obscure songs for the second leg. It is also worthy to note that "Roll The Bones" was dropped for the first time ever. Keeping score on the songs played: only 6 songs were played from albums released between Moving Pictures and Vapor Trails (only one from the 90's, and one from the 80's was only performed for less than half of the tourdates); not including the drum solo, of the 27 songs played, 17 were from PeW, MP or SA - roughly 2/3 of the concert (2/3 of the entire Permanent Waves album was included). It also is worth mentioning that between the last three tours, Rush played 6/7ths of Moving Pictures live; "The Camera Eye" being the notable exception.
Setlist changes during this tour: for the first leg, with few exceptions, "Summertime Blues" alternated with "Distant Early Warning" each show after the first 12 dates; both songs were replaced by "2112 Overture/Temples Of Syrinx" for the second leg although the "2112 medley" followed "The Spirit Of Radio" rather than preceding it. With the return of the "2112" medley in the second leg setlist, the Counterparts tour remains the only tour to not include any part of "2112" in the setlist. Other changes for the second leg: "Ghost Of A Chance" replaced "Entre Nous"; "Red Barchetta" replaced "Secret Touch"; and "The Trees" replaced "Circumstances".

"Closer To The Heart", "Leave That Thing Alone" and "Vital Signs" were brought back after last being played on the Vapor Trails tour, and after being rested for the Snakes & Arrows tour, old standards "La Villa Strangiato" and "Working Man" returned. Geddy Lee has addressed performing shorter shows in certain countries:
"We always play basically the same show; sometimes what we'll do is shorten the show a little bit if we're playing an area that isn't as familiar with our material as another area. So sometimes we'll make that a slightly more condensed version of the show. And some countries, if we're not bringing the entire show with us, we might condense the show for that reason as well." - Geddy Lee, "Rockline", December 4, 1989
